Chapter 11
Zoey sat with her mother for thirty minutes, watching closely for any signs that she may return to lucidity. Steve brought them each a plate of ham and potatoes, seeming to understand that Zoey wasnât going to be able to honor her agreement to have dinner with him. Helen ate a few bites of food and then returned to gazing out the window, seeming to have fallen deeply back within her own mind. Back out of Zoeyâs reach.
Slowly, the room filled with residents again as they finished dinner. Eventually, the main topic of discussion returned to Cyrus, and things got heated again. Everyone had a different idea about the best way to help him.
Eventually, Zoey joined in the lively discussion too. âThe only way I know to help Cyrus is to figure out where Iris is and who was really involved in taking her.â
Shawna frowned. âBut how do we do that? I mean, Iris was our psychic.â
âWe donât need a psychic. We can do it the old-fashioned wayâby following clues,â Snores insisted. Even though heâd been retired from police life for years, he still thought like a cop.
âWhat clues?â Shawna scoffed. âI donât see anything jumping out at us.â
Zoey exchanged a glance with Steve, who nodded. âActually, we have one tiny clue, but Steve and I canât figure out what to do with it.â
Silence descended upon the room. Everyone gathered closer to hear what Zoey had to say. She almost giggled as everyone gazed raptly at her, like kindergarteners waiting to hear a story. âWe visited Irisâ twin sister, Darlene, and she gave us Irisâ premonition journal. Her last foretelling was that someone was grabbed by a dark figure and dragged to a house under a huge apple tree.â
Retirees blinked and exchanged befuddled glances with each other. Maria cleared her throat. âIs that it, dear?â
Zoey nodded and shrugged. âThatâs it. Does anyone know of a particularly huge apple tree in or around Sunnyside?â
There was more blinking and exchanging of glances, followed by the shaking of many gray heads.
âYou know, in my day, there were a lot more apple trees around here than there are now,â Maria mused. âIn fact, this whole area was orchards and fields. Itâs really grown up so much.â
The residents launched into a discussion about businesses that had come and gone and all the development theyâd seen in Sunnyside during their lives. It was well past eleven by the time Zoey, Steve, and Kelli managed to get everyone to abandon their reminiscing and head to bed.
Steve and Zoey climbed the stairs toward their suites together. When they got to the top of the stairs, he gathered her into a hug. âHow are you holding up?â
âIâm okay.â Her voice was muffled against his shoulder. âMy mom was lucid for a few minutes, and she gave me some closure on stuff that happened before she disappeared.â
Steve pulled back to look her in the eyes, a wide grin on his face. âThatâs fantastic. How are you feeling about what she said?â
Zoey shrugged.
